Brow lamination and lash lift: what they are and which suits you

Lamination, lash lift or tinting?

These three treatments do different things. In lamination the brow hairs are brushed and fixed in a new direction, so the brows look fuller. A lash lift bends your own lashes upwards into a curve, while tinting gives the hairs colour but leaves their direction as it is.

If your brows already grow neatly, tinting and shaping may be enough. If the hairs grow in different directions or your lashes are straight, lamination or a lash lift gives more.

What is brow lamination?

A lifting lotion is applied to the brow hairs, the hairs are brushed into shape and then a setting lotion is applied. Finally the brows are tinted, stray hairs are removed and the hairs are treated with oil.

Lamination does not add hairs. When the hairs lie in the same direction they cover sparse areas, and in the morning a quick brush is enough. Brow lamination and tint takes about 45 minutes.

What is a lash lift?

Your own lashes are brushed up onto a soft silicone mould sized to their length. First a lotion that shapes the curl goes on, then one that fixes it. To finish, the lashes get a caring, nourishing product.

Your eyes stay closed throughout, and many people relax or even fall asleep. A lash lift does not lengthen the lashes, but once they are lifted their full length shows. A lash lift takes about 60 minutes.

Is tinting enough?

Tinting suits hairs that are light and already grow neatly. It gives the brows definition and the lashes depth without mascara.

Tinting does not change the direction of the hairs. If you want brushed-up brows or curled lashes, choose lamination or a lash lift.

Lash lift or lash extensions?

Extensions mean artificial lashes glued to your own, and they need refilling every few weeks. A lash lift only shapes the lashes you already have, so there's no glue, no refills and no extra weight. The look is subtler and very natural.

Skinique does not do lash extensions. If you want a natural look that copes with the sauna and swimming, a lash lift is a good choice.

How long does the result last?

Brow lamination and a lash lift both last 6–8 weeks, because hairs are renewed all the time. New hairs grow in their own direction, and the result softens gradually.

How long it lasts depends on hair growth, aftercare and hormones. During pregnancy and breastfeeding the result may not last as long as usual. Your cosmetologist will tell you at your visit how often the treatment is worth repeating for you.

Who is the treatment not for?

Brow lamination is not done if there is a rash, broken skin or sunburn around the brows. A lash lift has to wait if you have an eye infection or a stye, or if your eye surgery was less than 3 months ago.

Neither is done if you have reacted before to lash, brow or hair dye or to lifting lotion. Tell us about allergies and pregnancy in advance.

How do you prepare, and how do you care for the result?

Before the treatment:

• do not pluck or wax your brows for a week, so there is enough to shape
• come without eye and brow make-up if you can
• remove contact lenses before a lash lift and bring the case

After the treatment:

• keep brows and lashes dry for 24 hours, with no sauna or swimming
• do not rub your eyes on the first day
• brush your brows each morning and care for the hairs with oil or serum
