What affects your skin

Three steps: choose an age and a topic, then see why it happens and what you can change.

1 · Age and points on the face

The points on the photo and the buttons below show where the chosen topic appears: a solid ring means most often, a dashed ring means it can appear too. The places change with age.

          Finland: the figures

          What you can do yourself

What to look for in ingredients

The top layer of the skin renews in about 4 weeks when we are young, and more slowly with age. That is why home care is judged after 4–8 weeks at the earliest, and spots and wrinkles after 3 months.

This is a guide, not a diagnosis.

4 · The sun and your skin type

Which option is closest to your skin without a tan (Fitzpatrick phototype)?

            Two kinds of rays

UVBShort rays. They cause redness and sunburn. Strongest at midday in summer. Window glass blocks almost all of them.
UVALong rays. They go deeper, break down collagen and cause spots. Present all year round and pass through clouds and glass.
What to chooseA product marked “broad spectrum” or with UVA in a circle: it protects against both kinds.

When SPF is a must in Finland

Orange marks the months when the UV index in southern Finland rises to 3 or higher (FMI data). In spring the face can also burn on snow, especially in the fells and in Lapland: snow reflects the rays.

A treatment does not replace home care and sun protection. Results are individual; we plan the course together at a consultation.

            Your summary

Put together from your answers above. It is a guide, not a diagnosis: at a consultation our specialist will look at your skin and refine the plan.

What we do not know yet
            • What share of visible ageing comes from the sun (there is no primary study with a figure).
            • How much smoking, alcohol and lack of sleep add to wrinkles.
            • The effect of treatments on wrinkles in randomised trials.
            • Causes of dark circles other than heredity.

This is not a medical diagnosis. It is a guide to the questions you chose. For a personal plan, please talk to a Skinique specialist.
